Słucham albumu Mandylion zespołu The Gathering, przenosi mnie bez mała ćwierć wieku wstecz.

There are three beginnings of the year within a single year. The calendar one, set for the beginning of January, the one that predates it, when life awakens in the spring and the youngest of them all, the start of the school year. And so it just so happens that my life is still strongly tied to that last one, even though I haven’t had anything to do with school for a long time. Summer is still the time when I devote more days to rest than at any other time of the year, and above all, my life becomes exceptionally disorganized. And when August ends, I begin a new cycle that will last, with breaks, until June. New projects, often new resolutions, learning anew how to battle the accelerating pace of time, stress, and the gathering darkness, but also the immense power of a wave of nostalgia and the energy gained over the summer, channeled into new action.

Today marks the anniversary of J.R.R. Tolkien’s death. Just three days ago, I returned to his prose not remembering about this fact. It will be a great adventure, just as it always has been. I’m certain of it. I’m taking my time, using a free moment every two or three days.

I’m listening to the album *Mandylion* by The Gathering. It takes me back at least a quarter of a century. (Only?) in the past one can rediscover innocence. (Only?) in innocence one can once again fly on the wings of imagination toward the light.

Does the transition from Summer to Fall carry such a charge of emotion for you as well?

Będzie o śmierci, ale bez drastycznych opisów.

	Wczoraj przed snem:

	 EN

It will be about death, but without drastic descriptions.

	Yesterday before bed:

I’m reading about Norwid’s belief in the significance of seemingly unrelated events that are nevertheless connected by a common meaning. I read, for example, about his friend who committed suicide. Just a day or a few days before his death, he made a mistake in front of him by misplacing the stress (emphasis?) in a foreign, Italian word, and instead of calling the waiter, he unintentionally shouted that he was drowning (he later drowned).

	Earlier that same day,

someone next to me was talking about someone who had hanged himself.

	Even earlier.

A friend writes that he might not be able to meet up. Someone close to him has passed away.

	Last night, I dreamed

that I was committing suicide. I didn’t lose consciousness, though, and the dream continued for a long time before I finally woke up tired and anxious.

	In an hour,

	    	I’m going to a funeral.

I hope that’s the end of it for now. But that’s not the point.

Sometimes events that seem related aren’t connected by any deeper meaning. Other times, events whose meaning we don’t see are foreshadowing others. People who sense their own death sometimes give us signs that we don’t recognize. People who are planning their own deaths often tell us about it almost directly. It’s hard to accept such information, though, so it’s easy to overlook it. Just try to be mindful, that’s all. Don’t read into things that aren’t there, and don’t close your eyes to what is. Be attentive.

Kobieta idzie o kulach, z trudem pokonując kolejne metry.

I ruszam dalej w swoją stronę zostawiając ją z tyłu. Nie dlatego, że uciekam. Dlatego, że nic lepszego nie mogę zrobić. Chyba. Na tę intuicję postawiłem.

	 EN

The elderly woman looks at me with a mixture of embarrassment and ironic pity. The latter is more of a mask she’s put on to hide the former—that’s how I assess it in a split second. I don’t know how to react to ease her suffering. So I smile slightly, nodding calmly, and say nothing in response.

The woman walks with crutches, struggling to cover each meter. When I opened the door for her—quickly, too quickly, as if I’d misjudged her abilities—she said:

		- I don’t move that fast, you see. I still have to switch the keys to my other hand, and I still need to steady myself… - And that’s when she looked at me with that look that threw me off balance.

		- I know, ma’am, I know what it’s like. Just a year ago, I walked the same way. It took me about fifteen minutes to climb the stairs, not twenty seconds like it does now. I’ve been there, and I know what it’ll be like when I’m an old man. That is, if I’m even granted the chance to live that long.” - That response flashes through my mind faster than the blink of an eye, and it never leaves my lips. I can’t say that.

So I smile slightly, but not too broadly. Just a simple, friendly, patient smile—but without any hint of concern that might be mistaken for pity. And I keep walking in my direction, leaving her behind. Not because I’m running away. But because there’s nothing better I can do. I think. I’ve decided to go with that intuition.

To kolejna z cegiełek, kolejne małe popchnięcie w plecy. Idź i nie grzesz więcej. Idź i bądź człowieku lepszy. Gdy codzienność bierze nas w obroty, zanurzamy się w to życie i wracamy w swoje skorupy, swoje małe klatki mechanizmów obronnych i umożliwiających nam przetrwanie systemów odruchów.

	 EN

I’m standing at the kitchen counter. I’m chopping vegetables with a Japanese knife. I’m smiling to myself.

A year ago, as I was recovering from an illness that had confined me to bed and landed me in the hospital, that is, since when I was even able to look at a screen, I watched everything that caught my interest for hours and hours. I also watched a program about Japanese knives back then and decided to change up our home cooking, to finally invest in a good knife. I went to buy it as soon as I had the strength to make the trip into city. Since then, chopping and cutting has been a pleasure. Now, a year later, the sight of it brings back additional memories of that time. Combined with the smell of the sweltering air, the cries of swifts, and the taste of blueberries or cucumbers that I ate back then, these memories transport me back in time.

A year ago. It was a time of very intense experiences. The last time I lived so intensely, so fully savoring every moment, was in my childhood, early childhood. Everything tasted so good, but also (unlike in childhood) I was so capable of... No, I had to! I had to be grateful. Tears welled up in my eyes every moment from the emotion. I seized every moment of life. Now I remember it again, now I can feel it a little bit again.

Someone wrote to me back then (perhaps you’re reading this) that it’d be interesting to see how this will change my life. I’d like to say that I remember, that this experience changed me, but it’s not such a drastic change. It’s another building block, another little nudge in the back. Go and sin no more. Go and be a better person. Life slips through your fingers so easily if you don’t remember this in every single moment, if you aren’t moved by its beauty in every single moment. When everyday life sweeps us up, we immerse ourselves in it and retreat into our shells, our little cages of defense mechanisms and the reflex systems that enable our survival. Autopilots, blinders. Brief moments of reflection—they’re not enough.
